What is CrossFit?
The technical definition of CrossFit is “constantly varied, functional movements, executed at relative high intensity.” In practical terms it is a mix of weightlifting, gymnastics and cardio. The daily workouts are short, medium and long in duration and are aimed at building a fit functional body that prepares you to take on the demands of life on Earth.
It is a lifestyle characterized by safe, effective exercise and sound nutrition. CrossFit can be used to accomplish any goal, from improved health to weight loss to better performance. The program works for everyone — people who are just starting out and those who have trained for years.
CrossFit is also a sport that can bring a competitive edge to your training. You can compete against yourself, or the people in your class as each workout is based on accumulating as many reps as possible (AMRAP) or completing a workout in a time that is as fast as possible (AFAP). If you want to take your fitness to the next level, you can enter a range of amateur competitions to test your fitness against CrossFitters from other affiliates.
Constant Variation
Every day brings a different workout that will focus on developing strength, power, endurance, mobility as well as a wide range of physical skills using varying levels of effort (intensity) that are adjusted to challenge you and safely improve your fitness, faster. The variety in the movements, duration and intensity means that your body will adapt and improve how it functions as you are exposed to different types of physical stressors.
Functional Movements
CrossFit workouts include compound movements that have a cross-over to the things you need to do in your everyday life. These movements require you to use lots of muscle groups at the same time which mimic tasks such as picking stuff up off the floor, putting things over your head and getting up and down. A big part of CrossFit that separates itself from other functional gyms is the skills development. You will learn a range of basic to intermediate weightlifting and gymnastics movements that will challenge your neuromuscular system, coordination, speed, power and balance in new ways.
Relative High Intensity
The relative intensity means that you burn a lot of calories in a safe and efficient way that is right for you. All movements are modified to suit your fitness level, either by scaling the exercise or adjusting the range of motion, volume of work or load to ensure you always move safely.
